Grounded answers for small business

Why a business chatbot should answer only from the owner’s own content, say “I don’t know” when it should, and hand over to a human on WhatsApp. The thinking behind fad.fyi.

1. The problem with “smart” chatbots

Most chatbots fail small businesses in one of two ways. The old kind follows a fixed script: press 1 for timings, press 2 for prices. It cannot handle a real question like “kal subah 9 baje khule rahoge?”. The new kind, built on large language models, handles any question but has no idea about your shop. Ask it your delivery charge and it will produce a confident number that you never set.

For a small business, a wrong price is worse than no answer. It costs money, trust, and sometimes a customer for good. The goal is not a chatbot that can say anything. It is a chatbot that only says what you would say.

2. What grounded means

An answer is grounded when every fact in it comes from content the owner provided: a price list, a note about timings, a PDF brochure, a question and its approved answer. The AI’s job is to find the right piece of your content and phrase it naturally in the visitor’s language. It is not allowed to fill gaps from general knowledge.

This changes what “good” looks like. A grounded fad that knows ten things and answers those ten perfectly is more useful than a general assistant that knows everything approximately. Owners can see exactly what their fad knows, which means they can fix it.

3. The value of “I don’t know”

Visitors forgive a chatbot that says “I don’t have that yet, let me connect you to the owner”. They do not forgive one that invents a 2 pm delivery slot that never existed. Saying “I don’t know” is not a failure of the system. It is the system working.

Every honest “I don’t know” is also a signal. It tells the owner what customers want that the fad cannot yet answer. In fad.fyi these questions collect in a Teach tab. The owner writes the answer once, and the fad knows it from then on. The fad becomes a list of what customers actually ask, written by the customers themselves.

4. Handoff is a feature

In India, business happens on WhatsApp. A chatbot that keeps a customer inside a chat window when they want to order, book or complain is a wall. The right move is to hand over, fast, with context. fad.fyi does this with a single button that opens the owner’s WhatsApp with the visitor’s question already typed.

The owner chooses when this appears: when someone asks for a person, also whenever the fad cannot answer, or never. The handoff is part of the answer, not a dead end.

5. Language is trust

People type the way they talk. Most Indian customers write Hinglish, Hindi in English letters, with a mix of English words. A fad that insists on formal English feels foreign. One that replies “haan, Sunday ko 10 se 1 tak khule hain” feels like the shop itself.

Grounding and language work together. The content can be in English. The understanding and the reply adapt to the visitor. The facts never change; only the words do.

6. The owner stays in control

Small business owners do not want to “configure an AI”. They want to drop a file, type a few lines, and see it work. Every control in fad.fyi maps to something an owner already understands: what it knows, how it talks, what it looks like, who can see it, where it is shared.

Control also means visibility. Owners can read every chat, see which language visitors used, and where the fad handed over. They can take a fad private, unlisted or public with one tap, and delete it for good, including every chat, at any time.

7. How fad.fyi is built on this

8. Summary

The best chatbot for a small business is not the one that knows the most. It is the one that never says anything the owner would not say, knows when to stay quiet, hands over to a human at the right moment, and speaks the customer’s language. That is what a fad is built to be.
